about

Composer Jascha Narveson crafted Flash Crash especially for internationally acclaimed cellist Ashley Bathgate out of raw stock market data culled from high-frequency trading bots. The piece uses the 2010 “Flash Crash” – a 5-minute stock-market collapse caused by the unforeseen interaction of different robot traders – as an entry point for a reflection on algorithms, automation, artificial intelligence, and their entanglement with contemporary life. The cello is placed in a world driven by the techno-like sounds of synthesizers and drum machines, fusing lyrical writing with the non-human patterns found in the original spreadsheets.

Why remixes? Jascha’s love of community, collaboration, and techno inspired the commissioning remixes of the original recording. Present on this album are five composers whose sound Jascha loves – together they trace five very different routes through the original audio, taking the listener on a wild ride.

• The original piece by Jascha Narveson combines the timbre of synths and drum machines with the non-human patterns of robot-influenced stock data as a backdrop for cello writing that is by turns lyrical and angular, slow and frantic.
• Matthew D. Gantt's remix renders the piece in a hyper-vivid 4K, employing terabytes of sample libraries to plunge the listener into the uncanny valley.
• Synth-wizard Lorna Dune picks the piece up in her spaceship and takes it to an endless celestial disco plateau.
• Lainie Fefferman's sci-fi interlude is part Arrival, part Wall-E, and investigates what the service robots are doing deep in the hull of the disco-ship from track 3...
• Angélica Negrón's remix weaves a layer of skittering microsamples over a beautiful bed of warm, oceanic bass tones reminiscent of Amber-era Autechre.
• Finnish electronic music legend Vladislav Delay's epic finale is part extreme metal, part free jazz, and part foley track, employing rapid changes of texture and density for maximum impact.

I was raised in a concert hall and put to sleep as a child with a vinyl copy of the Bell Labs mainframe singing "Bicycle Built for Two." I now make music for people, machines, and interesting combinations of people and machines.
